Miroestrol is a phytoestrogenic compound found primarily in the plant Pueraria mirifica, a traditional herb from Thailand. Historically, Pueraria mirifica has been used in Thai folk medicine for various purposes, including as a rejuvenating remedy for women, with claims that it can enhance breast size and firmness. The belief arises from miroestrol’s structural similarity to estrogen, the primary female sex hormone responsible for the development and maintenance of breast tissue. This traditional use underpins its inclusion in many breast enhancement supplements and creams marketed in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.
However, scientific evidence supporting miroestrol’s efficacy for breast enlargement remains limited and inconclusive. While some animal studies and small-scale human trials suggest that Pueraria mirifica extracts can have estrogenic effects, including mild breast changes (such as tenderness or slight enlargement), these studies are generally of low quality, short duration, and often lack rigorous controls or adequate sample sizes. Systematic reviews and regulatory agencies have noted the absence of robust, long-term, placebo-controlled clinical trials demonstrating significant or safe breast enhancement effects in humans. Therefore, while the use of miroestrol for this purpose is rooted in traditional medicine, scientific validation is weak, and further high-quality research is needed to substantiate these claims.
