Arisaema, particularly species such as Arisaema erubescens and Arisaema japonicum, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Known in TCM as "Tian Nan Xing" (天南星), the tuber of Arisaema is commonly processed and used to address conditions involving "phlegm" and "wind," which often correspond to respiratory issues in the bronchial system from a Western perspective. Historically, it is prescribed to help relieve cough, reduce phlegm, and alleviate symptoms such as wheezing or difficulty breathing, especially in chronic bronchitis or asthma-like conditions. The tuber is considered toxic in its raw state and is always processed before medicinal use to reduce irritant and toxic compounds. Modern scientific evidence for Arisaema's efficacy in supporting the bronchial system is limited. While a few in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antitussive (cough-suppressing) activity, these findings are preliminary and not yet substantiated by robust clinical trials in humans. There is also concern about toxicity, particularly with improper preparation. In summary, the use of Arisaema to support the bronchial system is primarily justified by traditional use, with modest supporting evidence and significant safety considerations.
