Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arisaema cum bile is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation, typically consisting of the processed tuber of Arisaema erubescens (or related Arisaema species), treated together with bovine bile. This ingredient is recorded in classical Chinese medicinal texts and pharmacopeias as "Dan Nan Xing" (胆南星). In TCM, Dan Nan Xing is used to "resolve phlegm," "reduce wind," and "relieve spasms," and it is commonly included in herbal formulas targeting respiratory or bronchial conditions characterized by excessive phlegm, cough, or wheezing.

The rationale for its use is grounded in centuries of empirical practice and documented in authoritative TCM references such as the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. However, direct scientific validation through controlled clinical trials is lacking. Some pharmacological studies (mostly in vitro or animal-based) suggest that compounds in Arisaema species may have anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects, but these findings are preliminary and not robustly replicated in human studies. Therefore, while the use of Arisaema cum bile for bronchial support is well justified by tradition, its efficacy and safety according to modern scientific standards have not been conclusively established.
