Aster root (Aster tataricus) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as an herb that supports the bronchial body system. In TCM, it is known as Zi Wan and is often included in herbal formulas intended to treat coughs, phlegm, and other respiratory complaints. The root is thought to have moistening properties and is used to relieve coughs, especially those associated with thick or sticky sputum. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" (Divine Farmer’s Classic of Materia Medica) and subsequent materia medica works describe Aster root’s ability to descend lung qi and transform phlegm.

However, while its traditional use is well established, the scientific evidence supporting these effects is limited and primarily based on in vitro studies or animal research. Some studies have indicated that extracts of Aster tataricus may have antitussive (cough-suppressing), anti-inflammatory, or expectorant effects, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while aster root is traditionally used to support the bronchial system and there is a plausible basis for its inclusion in herbal formulas, the evidence rating remains low due to the lack of rigorous scientific validation.
