Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Traditional practitioners believed that Boswellia resin could reduce inflammation and mucus in the airways, making it easier to breathe and supporting overall bronchial health. The key active constituents, boswellic acids, were thought to play a role in soothing respiratory discomfort.

From a scientific perspective, there is some preliminary evidence that Boswellia possesses anti-inflammatory properties, particularly through the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme involved in leukotriene synthesis. Leukotrienes are mediators of inflammation in asthma and other bronchial conditions. However, most clinical research has focused on Boswellia's effects on inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Only a small number of studies have investigated its potential benefits in respiratory diseases, with mixed or inconclusive results. For example, a few small trials have suggested possible improvement in asthma symptoms, but these studies were limited by small sample size and methodological issues.

Overall, the use of Boswellia to support the bronchial system is primarily justified by traditional use, with limited and low-quality scientific evidence to confirm its efficacy for this purpose. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to better understand its potential role in respiratory health.
