Evidence supporting the use of: Boswellic Acid
For the body system: Bronchials
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boswellic acid is a major active component of the resin from the Boswellia serrata tree, commonly known as frankincense. Traditionally, Boswellia and its extracts have been used in Ayurvedic and other systems of traditional medicine to support respiratory health, including management of bronchial and pulmonary conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. The rationale for its use is based on its purported anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation in the airways and ease breathing.
However, while preclinical studies have demonstrated that boswellic acids can inhibit certain inflammatory pathways (such as 5-lipoxygenase), direct scientific evidence supporting the use of boswellic acid specifically for bronchial support in humans is limited. Most available studies have focused on its effects in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. A few small clinical trials have investigated Boswellia’s effect on asthma, suggesting some potential benefits like improved lung function and reduced asthma symptoms, but these studies often have methodological limitations and are not conclusive.
In summary, the use of Boswellic acid for bronchial support is primarily grounded in traditional practice, with some emerging but still insufficient scientific evidence. More rigorous clinical trials are required to validate its efficacy and safety for this specific application.
