For the body system: Bronchials
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda, particularly the species Centipeda minima, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Australian Aboriginal herbal practices. Traditionally, it has been used to address respiratory issues such as coughs, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and bronchitis. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is known as "E Bu Shi Cao" and is thought to "dispel wind," "diffuse the lung," and relieve symptoms related to the upper respiratory tract, including sinus congestion and bronchial discomfort. Herbal preparations often involve decoctions, tinctures, or powders from the plant's aerial parts.
While several lab and animal studies have investigated Centipeda's anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antioxidant activities, clinical research in humans is lacking. Some studies have identified sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids in Centipeda, which may have biological effects relevant to respiratory health, such as inhibiting inflammatory mediators. However, no large-scale or well-controlled human trials have confirmed its safety or efficacy for supporting the bronchial system. Therefore, its use for bronchial support is primarily justified by traditional application rather than robust scientific validation.
