Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chekiang Fritillary (Fritillaria thunbergii), known as "Zhe Bei Mu" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting the bronchial system, particularly for conditions involving cough, phlegm, and lung heat. Historically, it is classified in TCM as an herb that clears heat and transforms phlegm. The bulbs of Chekiang Fritillary are included in classic Chinese herbal formulas intended for respiratory complaints, including chronic coughs, bronchitis, and other disorders involving thick or difficult-to-expectorate sputum.

While there is substantial traditional documentation supporting its use, modern scientific validation is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Fritillaria species contain alkaloids (such as peimine and peiminine) that exhibit antitussive (cough-suppressing) and expectorant effects, and may have mild anti-inflammatory properties. However, most of the evidence is preclinical, and there is a lack of high-quality human clinical trials confirming efficacy or safety for bronchial support. Thus, the use of Chekiang Fritillary for the bronchial system is primarily justified by traditional use, with a modest (but not robust) foundation in preliminary pharmacological research.
