Fritillaria, particularly the bulbs of Fritillaria cirrhosa and related species, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting respiratory health, especially for relieving coughs and clearing phlegm from the lungs. This traditional use is documented in classic TCM texts, where fritillaria (known as "Chuan Bei Mu") is often included in herbal formulas targeting conditions such as chronic cough, bronchitis, and other lung-related issues. The main active components, such as peimine and peiminine, are believed to have expectorant, antitussive (cough-suppressing), and anti-inflammatory properties.

While there is some modern pharmacological research suggesting these compounds can reduce airway inflammation and mucus production in animal models, high-quality clinical trials in humans are limited. Most contemporary studies are either in vitro or use animal subjects, and while they often support traditional claims, the evidence is not yet robust by Western scientific standards. Thus, the justification for fritillaria's use in supporting the bronchial system is primarily based on tradition, with moderate preliminary scientific support that does not yet rise to the level of strong clinical validation.
