Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) has been used traditionally for centuries as a remedy for coughs and other respiratory complaints. Historical records show that it was employed in ancient Greek and Roman medicine, and it has remained a common ingredient in herbal cough syrups and lozenges. The plant contains marrubiin, a bitter compound believed to stimulate the production and expulsion of mucus, which may help to soothe the throat and ease coughing. Additionally, folk medicine texts often list horehound as an expectorant, supporting its use for bronchial health.

While laboratory studies suggest that marrubiin may have some expectorant and mild bronchodilatory effects, current clinical evidence from well-designed human trials is limited and inconclusive. There are few modern clinical studies directly evaluating horehound’s efficacy for bronchial or respiratory conditions. As such, the use of horehound for supporting the bronchial system is justified primarily by tradition and historical usage rather than robust scientific validation.
