Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus), a type of red seaweed, has been used traditionally in Irish and Caribbean herbal medicine to support respiratory health and soothe the bronchial passages. Its mucilaginous (gel-like) texture is believed to help coat the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, which may ease irritation and reduce coughs. Historical herbal texts and folk practices describe Irish Moss being made into teas or syrups for people suffering from colds, bronchitis, or persistent coughs.

Despite its widespread traditional use, scientific validation for Irish Moss specifically supporting bronchial health is limited. Most research on Irish Moss has focused on its general nutritional profile (rich in carrageenan, vitamins, and minerals) and its potential as a demulcent (a substance that relieves irritation of mucous membranes by forming a protective film). A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that its polysaccharides may have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, but robust clinical trials in humans targeting bronchial or respiratory outcomes are lacking.

Therefore, while Irish Moss continues to be used in herbal traditions for respiratory support, especially for its soothing effects, the scientific evidence base remains weak. Its use is justified primarily by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
