Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Jaborandi, derived from the leaves of the Pilocarpus species, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South America and among indigenous populations. The plant contains the alkaloid pilocarpine, which is known for its ability to stimulate exocrine glands, resulting in increased salivation and sweating. Traditionally, Jaborandi has been used as an expectorant and to support the bronchial system by promoting secretion and clearing of respiratory passages. Historical ethnobotanical records indicate its use for conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory ailments.

However, while pilocarpine is well-documented pharmacologically for certain uses (notably in ophthalmology for glaucoma and as a sialogogue in dry mouth), direct scientific studies validating Jaborandi or pilocarpine specifically for bronchial or respiratory support are limited. Most of the rationale for its use in the bronchial system rests on its traditional expectorant action and its ability to stimulate mucous gland secretion. Modern clinical trials or robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for bronchial health are lacking. Thus, its use for this purpose is best categorized as traditional, with a moderate historical precedent but limited scientific corroboration.
