Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligusticum, commonly known as lovage or by its genus name including species such as Ligusticum porteri (osha root) and Ligusticum sinense, has a long-standing use in traditional herbal medicine for supporting respiratory and bronchial health. Native American and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have used Ligusticum species to address issues such as cough, bronchitis, and congestion. The roots are often prepared as teas, tinctures, or decoctions, believed to act as expectorants and to help soothe inflamed respiratory passages. However, while these uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature, rigorous scientific studies validating efficacy for bronchial support are limited. Some laboratory studies suggest potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities in related species, but these findings are preliminary and do not constitute strong clinical evidence. Currently, the use of Ligusticum for bronchial support is justified primarily by traditional use rather than by robust scientific validation.
