Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mormon Tea (Ephedra spp.) has a long history of traditional use by Native American tribes and early settlers in the western United States, primarily as a remedy for respiratory issues. Traditionally, the stems were brewed into a tea thought to help alleviate symptoms of coughs, colds, asthma, and other bronchial conditions. The use is primarily attributed to the presence of naturally occurring alkaloids such as ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which can act as bronchodilators and mild stimulants. These compounds work by relaxing airway muscles and may help ease breathing. However, while the traditional use is well documented, modern scientific studies are limited, and safety concerns have arisen due to potential side effects and risk of misuse associated with ephedrine-containing products. The FDA has banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids due to safety risks. Nonetheless, the historical use of Mormon Tea for supporting the bronchial system is clear, but scientific validation for its efficacy and safety remains insufficient and controversial. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate due to strong traditional use but limited modern clinical support.
