Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and South America, to support the respiratory system, including the bronchial passages. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources attribute expectorant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties to nasturtium, making it a traditional remedy for bronchitis, coughs, and other respiratory tract infections. The plant contains compounds such as glucosinolates, which are thought to have mild antimicrobial effects. However, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is limited. A few laboratory studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity of nasturtium extracts against respiratory pathogens, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. In Germany, nasturtium is found in some phytotherapeutic products for the treatment of sinusitis and bronchitis, often combined with horseradish. Despite this, most of the evidence remains anecdotal or based on historical usage rather than modern scientific research. Thus, the use of nasturtium to support the bronchial system is justified by tradition, with limited but promising preclinical evidence, and a rating of 2 reflects the gap between traditional use and scientific confirmation.
