Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Peucedanum is a genus of plants in the Apiaceae family, with species such as Peucedanum praeruptorum and Peucedanum ostruthium used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Peucedanum praeruptorum root (known as Qian Hu) is commonly used to support the bronchial and respiratory systems. It is traditionally believed to help dispel phlegm, relieve cough, and ease symptoms associated with bronchial discomfort. The use of Peucedanum for these purposes is documented in classic Chinese herbal texts and remains a component of several multi-herb formulations aimed at respiratory health.

Scientifically, there is limited clinical evidence to substantiate these uses. Some preclinical studies have suggested that compounds in Peucedanum species possess anti-inflammatory, antitussive (cough-suppressing), and expectorant properties that could theoretically benefit the bronchial system. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and thus the scientific basis for its use remains weak. The evidence rating is therefore 2—there is a strong tradition of use, supported by in vitro and animal studies but not by high-quality clinical trials.

In summary, Peucedanum's use for bronchial support is primarily justified by traditional practice, with only preliminary scientific support.
