Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pine (typically referring to Pinus species, such as Pinus sylvestris) has a history of traditional use for supporting the bronchial and respiratory systems. In various folk medicine systems, pine needles, bark, and essential oils have been used as remedies for coughs, bronchitis, and other respiratory complaints. Pine needle tea, for example, has been consumed for its expectorant and soothing properties, while pine resin and essential oil have been used in steam inhalations to help clear airways.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited but suggestive evidence. Pine contains volatile compounds such as alpha-pinene and limonene, which may have mild bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory effects based on in vitro and animal studies. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically investigating pine’s efficacy for bronchial support are lacking. The majority of existing evidence is anecdotal or derived from traditional use, rather than modern clinical research. As a result, the use of pine for bronchial system support is primarily justified by tradition, with some preliminary pharmacological rationale, but not strong scientific validation.
