Rating (out of 5): 2

Quebracho (Schinopsis spp.) is a tree native to South America whose bark and wood extracts have been used in traditional medicine, particularly in Argentina and neighboring countries. Historically, Quebracho has been employed as a remedy for respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. The primary traditional use stems from its content of tannins and flavonoids, which were believed to have astringent and anti-inflammatory effects that could soothe irritated bronchial passages.

Early 20th-century European herbalists also adopted Quebracho extract, particularly its main alkaloid, quebrachine (aspidospermine), as a bronchodilator and to aid in the management of asthma. However, the evidence supporting these uses is mostly anecdotal or based on case reports and small, uncontrolled studies. Modern clinical trials are lacking, and the safety profile is not well established. Quebracho is not widely used in contemporary herbal medicine for bronchial support, and it is not recognized as a standard treatment for respiratory conditions in evidence-based medical practice. Therefore, while there is a tradition of Quebracho use for the bronchial system, robust scientific validation is lacking.
