Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8-cineole) essential oil is traditionally used in aromatherapy to support the respiratory or bronchial system. Its use is rooted in folk medicine, especially in Madagascar and other regions where the plant is native. The oil contains significant amounts of 1,8-cineole (also known as eucalyptol), a compound commonly found in eucalyptus oil and known for its expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional practitioners often recommend Ravintsara for colds, coughs, and congestion, suggesting inhalation or topical application as a means to support clear breathing.

However, direct scientific studies on Ravintsara essential oil for bronchial support are limited. Most available research focuses on 1,8-cineole as an isolated compound or on other essential oils that contain it (e.g., eucalyptus). Some studies suggest that 1,8-cineole can help reduce airway inflammation and improve symptoms in patients with respiratory conditions, but these cannot be directly extrapolated to Ravintsara oil as a whole. Therefore, while there is a plausible mechanism for benefit and a strong tradition of use, robust scientific validation specifically for Ravintsara is lacking, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
