Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Scarlet Fritillary (Fritillaria species, often Fritillaria cirrhosa or related species) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting the bronchial and respiratory systems. The bulbs, known as "Chuan Bei Mu" in Chinese, have been used for centuries to help address coughs, phlegm, and other symptoms associated with bronchial discomfort. Traditional herbal texts describe Scarlet Fritillary as having cooling and moistening properties, believed to help clear heat and transform phlegm in the lungs. However, while its historical use is well-documented, there is limited high-quality scientific research validating these effects in humans. Some laboratory studies have identified potential antitussive (cough-suppressing) and expectorant actions in animal models or in vitro, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in clinical trials. Most of the support for its use in bronchial health comes from centuries of empirical use within TCM, rather than from modern scientific validation.
