Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sida cordifolia, commonly known as Bala in Ayurvedic medicine, has a long history of traditional use to support the respiratory system, including the bronchial passages. In Ayurveda and Unani medicine, Sida cordifolia is used for conditions such as bronchial asthma, cough, and other respiratory ailments. The plant is believed to work as a bronchodilator, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory agent, which aligns with its use for bronchial support. Several traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use for respiratory health.

However, while there is some preliminary scientific investigation into its active compounds, such as ephedrine-like alkaloids, which are known to have bronchodilatory effects, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most studies are either in vitro, animal-based, or focus on chemical composition rather than clinical efficacy and safety in treating bronchial conditions. The use of Sida cordifolia for respiratory support is thus primarily justified by traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation.

Because of its alkaloid content, Sida cordifolia may pose safety concerns, particularly regarding cardiovascular effects, and is regulated or banned in some countries. Therefore, while tradition supports its use for bronchial health, the evidence is not strong, and careful consideration should be given to its safety profile.
