Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spanish Thyme (Plectranthus amboinicus), also known as Indian Borage or Cuban Oregano, has a long history of traditional use in various cultures for supporting respiratory health, including the bronchial system. In traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk practices in the Caribbean, Africa, and Southeast Asia, the leaves are often used to prepare teas, infusions, or poultices aimed at relieving symptoms of coughs, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory complaints. The plant contains volatile oils such as thymol and carvacrol, which are believed to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is limited scientific validation for these traditional uses. Few animal studies and in vitro experiments have suggested that extracts of Spanish Thyme may exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, which could theoretically benefit respiratory conditions, but these findings are preliminary and do not provide strong clinical evidence. No high-quality human clinical trials have directly evaluated the efficacy of Spanish Thyme for supporting the bronchial system. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific support remains weak and largely anecdotal. Caution is advised in interpreting the benefits until more rigorous research is conducted.
