Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds produced by many plants, particularly conifers, and some insects. They are the primary constituents of essential oils and are responsible for the aroma of many plants. The use of terpenes to support the bronchial or respiratory system is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine. Essential oils containing terpenes—such as eucalyptus oil (rich in eucalyptol), pine oil (pinene), and others—have been used historically in inhalations, balms, and salves to relieve symptoms of coughs, colds, and congestion. The rationale lies in their aromatic and sometimes mild antimicrobial properties, which were believed to help clear airways and soothe respiratory discomfort.

While some individual terpenes have shown bronchodilatory effects in preclinical studies (for example, alpha-pinene and eucalyptol), robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most modern support for their use remains anecdotal, and their efficacy has not been rigorously validated in large-scale studies. Therefore, the use of terpenes for bronchial support is best characterized as traditional, with modest evidence, largely based on historical usage and limited preclinical data rather than strong clinical validation.
