Terpenoids, also known as isoprenoids, are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes. They are found extensively in essential oils from various plants, such as eucalyptus, tea tree, and pine. The use of terpenoids to support the bronchial system has some scientific backing, mainly due to their anti-inflammatory, bronchodilatory, and mucolytic properties. For example, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), a prominent terpenoid in eucalyptus oil, has been shown in clinical studies to improve lung function and reduce exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Its mechanism is believed to involve inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduction of mucus production, thereby easing breathing. Other terpenoids, such as menthol, are known to produce a subjective sensation of improved airflow and mild bronchodilation.

However, while there is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting specific terpenoids for respiratory health, the evidence is not uniform across all terpenoids or all respiratory conditions. Most research focuses on isolated compounds rather than the broad category of terpenoids, and clinical studies are often limited in size and duration. Overall, terpenoids have a tradition of use in respiratory remedies, and a growing body of scientific literature supports their potential benefit in bronchial health, particularly for certain compounds and in the context of mild to moderate symptoms.
