Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Tylophora indica, also known as Indian Ipecac, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine in India for supporting respiratory health, particularly in the management of asthma, bronchitis, and other bronchial conditions. The leaves of the plant have been used as an expectorant and to relieve cough and wheezing. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical reports describe its use for clearing bronchial congestion and reducing inflammation in the airways.

Some preliminary scientific studies have explored the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Tylophora indica, suggesting possible benefits for respiratory conditions. Small clinical trials and animal studies have indicated potential bronchodilatory and antiasthmatic properties, but the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short duration, and methodological weaknesses. The main alkaloids, tylophorine and tylophorinine, are believed to be responsible for its pharmacological activities. However, these findings have not yet been confirmed in large, rigorous human trials, and safety concerns have been noted, including gastrointestinal side effects.

In summary, while there is a strong traditional basis for the use of Tylophora to support the bronchial system, scientific validation is currently limited and further research is needed to establish efficacy and safety.
