Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vasicinone is a quinazoline alkaloid derived from the plant Adhatoda vasica (also known as Malabar nut or Vasaka). Traditionally, extracts from Adhatoda vasica have been used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for centuries to support the bronchial system and treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and cough. The primary active constituents—vasicine and vasicinone—are credited with bronchodilatory, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional medical systems.
While there is a solid historical basis for the use of vasicinone-containing preparations in respiratory health, modern scientific evidence is still limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that vasicinone has mild bronchodilator and expectorant effects, and may modulate smooth muscle contraction in the respiratory tract. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence supporting its efficacy and safety is not yet strong enough to warrant widespread use based solely on scientific grounds. Therefore, the use of vasicinone to support the bronchial system is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with moderate (rated 3/5) evidence based on historical usage and preliminary research.
