Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

White thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine for respiratory ailments, including those affecting the bronchial system. Modern scientific studies support some of these traditional uses, especially due to its high thymol and carvacrol content, which have demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. Research indicates that thyme oil can help inhibit the growth of certain respiratory pathogens and may help reduce inflammation in the airways. A number of in vitro and animal studies show that thyme extracts can relax the tracheal muscles and decrease airway resistance, which could theoretically support easier breathing in conditions like bronchitis. Clinical studies in humans are limited, but some small trials and herbal combination studies (often with ivy leaf or other herbs) suggest symptomatic improvement in cough and bronchitis. The European Medicines Agency recognizes thyme preparations as a "traditional herbal medicinal product" for relief of cough associated with cold. However, the available evidence is not robust or large-scale, so while there is scientific support—mainly preclinical and some small human studies—the evidence is not conclusive or at the highest levels of clinical research. As such, White thyme is reasonably justified for supporting the bronchial system, but more rigorous clinical research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
