Serratiopeptidase, also known as serrapeptase, is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. Its primary use in supporting the healing of bruises is based on its documented anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic properties. Several small clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that serratiopeptidase can reduce swelling, pain, and the duration of inflammation following trauma, surgery, or injury, which could theoretically support bruise healing. The proposed mechanism involves the enzyme breaking down fibrin and other protein-based debris at the site of injury, thus promoting the resorption of fluid and reducing the size and persistence of bruises.

A handful of clinical trials have evaluated serratiopeptidase in the context of post-operative swelling and hematoma (a type of bruise), particularly in dental and orthopedic settings. For example, some randomized controlled trials have shown faster reduction in swelling and bruising in patients taking serratiopeptidase compared to placebo or standard anti-inflammatories. However, the quality of evidence is generally low, with small sample sizes and methodological limitations. To date, there is a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials specifically focused on serratiopeptidase for common bruises.

Overall, while there is some scientific basis for the use of serratiopeptidase in supporting the healing of bruises, the evidence is not robust. Its use is more scientifically justified than purely traditional, but further high-quality research is warranted to establish efficacy and optimal dosing.
