Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 3

Panax Notoginseng (also known as Sanqi or Tianqi) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment and prevention of bruises and trauma-related injuries. In TCM, Panax Notoginseng is believed to "stop bleeding," "disperse blood stasis," and "reduce swelling and pain," making it a common remedy for bruises, contusions, and internal bleeding due to physical trauma. The root of this plant is typically used either as a powder or in decoctions, both internally and topically.

There is a moderate amount of preclinical scientific research supporting these traditional uses. Studies have shown that Panax Notoginseng contains saponins (notoginsenosides) that may promote blood circulation and exhibit anti-inflammatory and hemostatic (blood-clotting) effects. Animal models suggest it can reduce bleeding time and accelerate hematoma absorption, though robust clinical trials in humans are limited. The majority of the evidence for its effectiveness in treating or preventing bruises comes from traditional usage and smaller studies, rather than from large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials. Thus, while its use for bruises is well-established in traditional practice and somewhat supported by pharmacological studies, higher-quality human evidence is lacking.
