Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is scientifically used to support or treat the symptom of burning feet or hands, which is medically referred to as peripheral neuropathy. Thiamine deficiency is a well-established cause of peripheral neuropathy, particularly in populations with poor nutrition or chronic alcoholism. The “burning feet syndrome” was first described in the early 20th century in prisoners of war and malnourished individuals, where thiamine deficiency was prevalent. Restoration of thiamine levels through supplementation led to resolution of neuropathic symptoms in many cases.

Modern clinical studies confirm that thiamine deficiency can cause neuropathic pain and paresthesias (such as burning sensations), particularly in the lower limbs. Supplementation with thiamine is an accepted treatment for deficiency-related neuropathy. However, for burning feet or hands not caused by thiamine deficiency, evidence supporting the use of thiamine is limited. Some studies suggest that high-dose thiamine or its derivatives (such as benfotiamine) may offer symptomatic relief in diabetic and other forms of neuropathy, but the evidence base is not robust, and more research is needed.

In summary, scientific evidence supports the use of thiamine for burning feet or hands when due to deficiency; its benefit in other neuropathies is promising but not yet definitively proven, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
