Evidence supporting the use of: Pagoda tree
For the health condition: Burns and Scalds
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. It is primarily known for its anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and antioxidant properties, attributed to its rich content of flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin. In the context of burns and scalds, traditional Chinese medicine texts mention the use of Pagoda Tree flower extracts or preparations to help reduce inflammation, promote healing, and prevent infection in minor burns and wounds. However, the evidence supporting these uses is mainly anecdotal or based on historical practice. There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts from the Pagoda Tree possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which are theoretically beneficial for burn wound healing. Nevertheless, high-quality clinical trials validating its efficacy specifically for burns and scalds in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use of Pagoda Tree for burns and scalds is justified primarily by tradition, and the scientific evidence remains limited and preliminary.
