Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Magnesium is scientifically validated as an important factor in calcium metabolism and supplementation strategies for calcium deficiency. Magnesium and calcium are both essential minerals that interact closely in the body, particularly in bone health, nerve function, and muscle contraction. Magnesium is required for the conversion of vitamin D into its active form, which in turn is necessary for effective calcium absorption in the gut. Studies have shown that magnesium deficiency can impair parathyroid hormone secretion, reducing calcium mobilization from bone and reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels). Clinical guidelines often recommend magnesium supplementation in cases of hypocalcemia that do not respond to calcium alone, particularly if magnesium deficiency is present. Several clinical trials and reviews support the correction of magnesium levels as a prerequisite for correcting certain forms of calcium deficiency, especially in cases of hypoparathyroidism or chronic kidney disease. However, magnesium supplementation alone is not a universal treatment for all cases of calcium deficiency; it is specifically indicated when magnesium deficiency coexists or is suspected. Thus, there is substantial scientific evidence supporting the adjunctive use of magnesium in treating calcium deficiency when magnesium status may be low.
