Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has traditionally been used in Japan and other parts of Asia as a general health tonic and for promoting longevity. Its use as a natural therapy to support or treat cancer is primarily based on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific validation. The plant contains several bioactive compounds, such as chalcones (notably 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol), which have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anti-tumor properties in laboratory studies. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that these compounds may inhibit the growth of cancer cells or induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in certain cancer cell lines. However, these findings have not yet translated into strong clinical evidence in humans. There are no large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating that ashitaba can prevent or treat cancer in humans.

Most of the support for ashitaba’s use in cancer is anecdotal or derived from its traditional use and the general assumption that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties might reduce cancer risk. It is sometimes included in cancer-supportive diets or alternative medicine regimens based on these traditional beliefs. Until more rigorous scientific research is conducted, ashitaba should not be considered a proven therapy for cancer, though it may have a role as part of a healthy diet. As always, individuals should consult with healthcare professionals before using ashitaba as a complementary approach to cancer therapy.
