Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng and American ginseng, has been explored as a complementary therapy in cancer care. The use of ginseng in this context is supported both by traditional medicine systems—most notably Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where ginseng is considered a general tonic—and by an emerging, but still limited, body of scientific research. Preclinical studies have shown that ginsenosides, the active compounds in ginseng, possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential anticancer properties. Laboratory and animal studies suggest that ginsenosides can inhibit tumor growth, induce apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells, and modulate immune responses. Clinical evidence in humans, however, remains limited and inconclusive. Some small clinical trials and observational studies have indicated that ginseng may help alleviate cancer-related fatigue and improve quality of life in cancer patients. For example, randomized controlled trials have found modest benefits in reducing fatigue among patients undergoing chemotherapy. There is also preliminary evidence that ginseng could mitigate chemotherapy-induced side effects and enhance overall well-being. However, there is currently insufficient high-quality evidence to support ginseng as a primary treatment for cancer or to prevent cancer progression. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in cancer therapy. As such, while ginseng is commonly used as an adjunct in cancer care and has some scientific basis for supportive use, its clinical utility remains limited, and it should not replace standard cancer treatments.
