Isothiocyanates are natural compounds found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. Their use in cancer prevention and therapy is primarily justified by scientific evidence from laboratory and epidemiological studies, though clinical evidence in humans remains preliminary.
Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that isothiocyanates, particularly sulforaphane and phenethyl isothiocyanate, can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in a variety of cancer types, including breast, prostate, and colon cancers. These compounds modulate cellular pathways such as the Nrf2 pathway, enhance the activity of phase II detoxification enzymes, and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—mechanisms that are linked to reduced cancer risk.
Epidemiological studies suggest that higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables correlates with a lower risk of certain cancers. However, results are not wholly consistent, and confounding dietary and lifestyle factors make it difficult to attribute effects solely to isothiocyanates. Human clinical trials with isolated isothiocyanates are limited, with most evidence derived from dietary interventions rather than purified compounds.
In summary, while there is substantial preclinical and some epidemiological evidence supporting the anticancer potential of isothiocyanates, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, their use as a complementary natural therapy for cancer is supported by moderate scientific evidence but should not replace conventional treatments.
