Lichens have been used in traditional medicine systems in various parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, and North America. Some traditional uses include the application of lichen extracts for their purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and, less commonly, anticancer properties. However, the use of lichen specifically for cancer prevention or treatment is not widespread or well-documented in the ethnobotanical literature compared to other conditions such as wounds or respiratory ailments. The interest in lichens for cancer-related uses is mostly based on their content of unique secondary metabolites, such as usnic acid, which exhibit various biological activities in vitro.
Scientific studies investigating the anticancer properties of lichens are limited and mostly preclinical. Some in vitro studies have shown that extracts or isolated compounds from certain lichen species can inhibit the growth of cancer cell lines through mechanisms like induction of apoptosis or cell cycle arrest. However, these findings have not been confirmed in human clinical trials, and there is no robust evidence to support the use of lichens or their compounds for cancer prevention or treatment in humans. Therefore, while there is a weak traditional basis and minimal scientific evidence at the laboratory level, lichens are not recognized as a validated or effective intervention for cancer prevention or therapy.
