Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Naringin is a flavonoid glycoside predominantly found in grapefruits and other citrus fruits. There is a growing body of preclinical evidence supporting its potential use in cancer prevention and adjunctive therapy. Laboratory studies (in vitro and in vivo) have demonstrated that naringin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative properties. These effects are attributed to its ability to scavenge free radicals, modulate cellular signaling pathways (such as PI3K/Akt, NF-κB, and MAPK), induce apoptosis, and inhibit angiogenesis in various cancer cell lines (including breast, liver, colon, and lung cancer models).

Despite these promising preclinical findings, clinical evidence in humans remains scarce. Most studies conducted to date are limited to cell cultures or animal models, and there is a lack of robust, well-designed human trials evaluating naringin's efficacy and safety specifically for cancer prevention or treatment. Some epidemiological data do suggest that higher consumption of citrus fruits (which are rich in flavonoids like naringin) may correlate with a reduced cancer risk, but these observations cannot be directly attributed to naringin alone.

In summary, while naringin shows significant anticancer potential in laboratory settings, its practical application for cancer prevention in humans awaits further validation through clinical research. At present, it is not a standard or approved therapy for cancer but may be considered as a dietary component with possible chemopreventive properties.
