Algal protein, primarily derived from sources such as Spirulina and Chlorella, has been investigated for its potential to support cancer patients, especially in mitigating the adverse effects of conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. The rationale for its use is based on the rich content of bioactive compounds in algae, including phycocyanin, polysaccharides, vitamins, and antioxidants. Several small-scale clinical studies and preclinical experiments suggest that supplementation with algal protein may help improve immune function, reduce oxidative stress, and alleviate treatment-induced fatigue and anemia. For example, a few trials have reported that Spirulina supplementation can enhance white blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels in patients undergoing chemotherapy, potentially reducing susceptibility to infection and improving quality of life.
However, the evidence base remains limited, with most studies being small, lacking rigorous controls, or conducted in animal models. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that while algal protein shows promise as a supportive nutritional intervention, there is insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical data to firmly establish its efficacy for reducing the side effects of cancer treatment. Thus, current scientific validation is modest, and algal protein should be considered a complementary rather than primary intervention, pending further research.
