Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been investigated for its potential to support cancer treatment, particularly in reducing side effects related to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The primary compounds of interest in ashitaba are chalcones, especially 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. In preclinical studies, these compounds have demonstrated the ability to scavenge free radicals and modulate immune responses, which could theoretically help mitigate the oxidative stress and inflammation associated with cancer therapies.

Some animal studies and in vitro research suggest ashitaba extracts may protect normal cells from DNA damage induced by chemotherapy agents, and may help maintain white blood cell counts. There is also limited evidence indicating that ashitaba may reduce gastrointestinal disturbances and fatigue, common side effects of cancer treatment, possibly through its anti-inflammatory impact and its ability to support gut health.

However, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, or small pilot trials, which do not provide strong, generalizable conclusions. Thus, while the use of ashitaba in this context is grounded in emerging scientific research, the strength of the evidence is currently low (rated 2/5). Further well-designed human studies are needed to validate these potential benefits for cancer patients and to determine safety and effective dosages.
