Fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids (mainly EPA and DHA), has been investigated for its potential to support cancer patients, particularly to reduce treatment side effects such as cachexia (weight and muscle loss), inflammation, and fatigue. Scientific studies indicate that omega-3 supplementation may help preserve muscle mass in patients experiencing cancer-related cachexia, and some clinical trials suggest improvements in quality of life and reductions in treatment-induced inflammation. Proposed mechanisms include modulation of inflammatory pathways, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and support of immune function. However, the evidence is mixed: while some randomized controlled trials have shown benefits, others have failed to demonstrate significant effects. There is also ongoing research into fish oil’s potential to mitigate chemotherapy-induced side effects, such as neuropathy, but results are not yet conclusive. Major cancer organizations acknowledge the possible supportive role of omega-3s but recommend them with caution, typically as part of a supervised nutrition plan. Overall, while there is a scientific basis and some evidence supporting the use of fish oil for reducing certain side effects of cancer treatment, the quality and consistency of the evidence are moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
