Aster root (Aster tataricus), commonly known as Zi Wan in traditional Chinese medicine, has a long history of use primarily for respiratory conditions such as cough and bronchitis. There is some tradition in East Asian herbal medicine for using aster root in various oral health applications; however, its use for canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is not a central or well-documented traditional indication. The rationale for occasional use may stem from its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to soothe mucosal irritation and possibly aid healing.

From a scientific standpoint, there is little published clinical research specifically evaluating aster root for the treatment or management of canker sores. Most available studies focus on its effects on the respiratory system, with only in vitro (test tube) or animal research suggesting potential anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects. These properties could theoretically be beneficial for oral ulcerations, but there is no direct evidence in humans for this application.

Thus, while there is a minor traditional precedent and a plausible mechanistic basis, the actual evidence—both traditional and scientific—supporting aster root's use for canker sores is weak. Its use for this purpose should be considered speculative and not evidence-based at this time.
