Evidence supporting the use of: Aster (unspecified)
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Aster species have a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in East Asian systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The roots and flowers of certain Aster species (such as Aster tataricus and Aster yomena) have been used for various ailments, often related to inflammation, cough, and sometimes for general mouth and throat conditions. There are anecdotal references to Aster preparations being used as topical rinses or poultices for oral ulcers, which could include canker sores (aphthous ulcers), but such uses are not widespread or highly documented in the ethnobotanical literature. There is currently very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Aster species specifically for canker sores. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts from certain Aster species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which theoretically could be beneficial in treating minor oral lesions. However, these studies are preliminary, usually in vitro, and have not directly evaluated outcomes in canker sore treatment or human clinical trials. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for the use of Aster in treating oral inflammatory conditions, the evidence is weak and not specific or robust for canker sores.
