Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia Pacumbis
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bergenia pacumbis (also known as Bergenia ligulata or "Paashaanbheda") has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, primarily for its purported benefits in urinary and kidney health, wound healing, and various inflammatory conditions. Its use for canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is based on its traditional reputation as an anti-inflammatory and wound-healing herb. In folk and traditional Indian medicine, decoctions or extracts of Bergenia pacumbis are sometimes applied topically to oral ulcers to alleviate pain and promote healing. This practice is referenced in some Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys, where the plant is listed among remedies for mouth sores or oral ulcers.
However, there is only limited scientific validation for this use. The primary evidence comes from general studies on the plant’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities, typically conducted in vitro or in animal models, not specifically for canker sores. There are no robust clinical trials or direct studies evaluating its efficacy in humans with aphthous ulcers. Thus, while the traditional use exists and has some plausibility due to the plant’s properties, the supporting evidence is rated as low (2/5), mainly because of a lack of targeted research.
