For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Corktree most commonly refers to the Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the bark of this tree, known as "Huang Bai," has been used for centuries to treat various inflammatory conditions, including mouth ulcers and canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Its use is rooted in TCM theory, where it is considered to clear "damp heat" and reduce toxicity, thus contributing to the healing of sores and ulcers in the mouth. Several TCM formulations for oral ulcers include Phellodendron bark as a key ingredient.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of corktree extracts for canker sores is limited. While some laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts of Phellodendron amurense possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, there is a lack of robust clinical trials evaluating its safety and effectiveness specifically for aphthous ulcers in humans. A few small studies and case reports suggest potential benefits, but these are not sufficient for strong scientific validation. Thus, its use for canker sores is primarily justified by traditional, historical practice rather than by modern clinical research.
