Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) has a traditional reputation in some systems of folk and Ayurvedic medicine for supporting oral health, including use in the management of canker sores (aphthous ulcers). In traditional Indian remedies, curry leaves are sometimes chewed, or made into pastes or decoctions, to soothe the mouth, reduce inflammation, and promote healing of oral ulcers. The purported benefits are attributed to the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties believed to be present in the leaves.

However, scientific validation for the use of curry leaf specifically for canker sores is minimal. While some laboratory studies indicate that curry leaf extracts have general antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, there are no controlled clinical trials or robust scientific studies that directly assess its effectiveness for treating or managing canker sores in humans. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for this specific condition is almost entirely traditional, with little to no direct scientific support at this time.
