Evidence supporting the use of: Huang Hua
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The use of "Huang Hua" (literally "yellow flower") is somewhat ambiguous, as it can refer to various yellow-flowering plants in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, in the context of canker sores (aphthous ulcers), Huang Hua most commonly refers to Flos Lonicerae (honeysuckle flower, 金银花, Jinyinhua). In TCM, honeysuckle flower is used for its purported "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, and is often included in herbal formulas for mouth ulcers, sore throat, and other inflammatory oral conditions. Historical texts and modern TCM practice both document the use of honeysuckle and similar "yellow flower" herbs for treating canker sores, usually as part of multi-herb decoctions or topical rinses. However, while there is a long tradition of such use, high-quality clinical trials directly validating its efficacy for canker sores are limited or lacking. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of honeysuckle extract, but these findings do not equate to proven clinical benefit for canker sores in humans. Thus, the evidence supporting Huang Hua's use for canker sores is primarily traditional, with a moderate level of indirect support based on historical usage and pharmacological plausibility.
