Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lodhtree (Symplocos racemosa), also known as Lodhra, is an herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Its application for oral health issues, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers), is primarily rooted in historical and ethnobotanical practices rather than modern clinical validation. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe Lodhra as having astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help in healing mouth ulcers, reducing pain, and controlling minor bleeding. Traditionally, powdered Lodhra bark is either used as a mouthwash or applied directly to the affected area.

However, scientific studies specifically evaluating Lodhra for canker sores are extremely limited. Available laboratory research has demonstrated that Lodhra possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, which could theoretically benefit oral lesions, but these studies are not directly related to canker sores in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have been conducted to establish its efficacy or safety for this indication. As such, while its use is supported by a long-standing tradition in Ayurveda, scientific evidence remains weak, justifying a low evidence rating.
