Mineral ascorbate, which refers to mineral salts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), such as sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate, has been used as a treatment to support healing of canker sores (aphthous ulcers). The rationale for its use is based on the known role of vitamin C in collagen synthesis and tissue repair, as well as its antioxidant properties. Some small clinical studies and case reports suggest that vitamin C deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of developing canker sores, and supplementation could reduce their frequency and severity in deficient individuals. For example, a few studies have shown that vitamin C supplementation (usually in the form of ascorbic acid, but mineral ascorbates are functionally similar in the body) may reduce healing time or prevent recurrence in some cases.
However, the overall scientific evidence is limited, with few randomized controlled trials and most studies being small, non-blinded, or lacking placebo controls. The available evidence does not robustly support routine use of vitamin C or mineral ascorbates for canker sores in people who are not deficient. Thus, while there is some scientific plausibility and limited clinical evidence, the strength of recommendation is weak (rated 2 out of 5). Use of mineral ascorbate may be most justified in individuals with known or suspected vitamin C deficiency, rather than as a general remedy for all cases of canker sores.
