Oak, particularly the bark of various Quercus species, has a long history of traditional use for treating canker sores (aphthous ulcers) and other oral mucosal conditions. In traditional European herbal medicine, oak bark decoctions or extracts have been used as a mouthwash or gargle to help soothe mouth irritations and ulcers. The rationale for this use is primarily based on the high tannin content of oak bark, which imparts astringent, anti-inflammatory, and mildly antiseptic properties. The astringency may help reduce inflammation, tighten mucosal tissues, and promote healing.

Scientific evidence for oak's effectiveness in treating canker sores is limited.
