Evidence supporting the use of: Red-Rooted Sage
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Red-Rooted Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Danshen in traditional Chinese medicine, has been used historically for various ailments, especially those related to blood circulation and inflammation. Its use for canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In traditional Chinese medicine, Salvia miltiorrhiza is believed to "cool the blood" and reduce inflammation, which may theoretically relate to the inflammatory nature of canker sores. Some small studies and case reports within Chinese medical literature suggest that herbal mouthwashes or topical preparations containing Danshen may provide symptomatic relief for oral ulcers, but these are generally of low methodological quality and are not widely acknowledged in mainstream medical literature.
There is a lack of well-controlled, large-scale clinical trials assessing the efficacy of Red-Rooted Sage specifically for canker sores. Most Western pharmacological research on Salvia miltiorrhiza has focused on cardiovascular, hepatic, and neuroprotective effects, rather than oral mucosal conditions. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for its use supported by anecdotal evidence and small-scale studies, scientific validation remains limited, and its use for canker sores is not widely recognized in evidence-based medicine.
